Biography

Sabrine S. Hakam is a mixed-media artist and researcher whose work explores themes of identity, representation, and power. Drawing from her academic background in African cities and postcolonial studies, she creates symbolism-infused portraits that engage with contemporary social and political issues. Through projects like Power in PortraitsDecolonize Everything!, and Culture Cloths, she challenges dominant narratives and invites audiences to engage in critical conversations. Her work has been exhibited at institutions such as MacKenzie House (Toronto History Museums), the Museum of Dufferin, and Fashion Art Toronto. Sabrine is also a recipient of the newcomer mentorship for 2023/24 and continues to expand her practice at the intersection of art and academia.

Sabrine holds a PhD in Geography (Arts) from King’s College London, as well as an MSc in Urbanisation and Development from the London School of Economics, an MPhil in Development Studies from the University of Oxford, and a BSc from New York University. She divides her time between Rabat, Morocco and Toronto, ON. She is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for African Studies at UM6P (University Mohammed VI Polytechnic).
